Urgent Urges

Today turned out to be a bigger challenge than I had expected. Basically, I got the water drinking wrong this morning which meant I was almost overflowing when I arrived at the centre.

It all started as normal. I drank the usual amount over breakfast and as I was getting ready. I then drank some more just before I left home, around 45 minutes before the appointment. So far, so good and there was no apparent problem as I started the drive. As usual, the feeling of needing a pee came on gradually and I usually expect it to start around 30 minutes before appointment time. That was more or less the case today as well.

While I was driving I took a few more gulps of water, as usual. When I was about five minutes from the centre, probably 20 minutes before appointment time, I could feel it begin to build up quite quickly. By the time I arrived I already felt fuller than on most previous days.

I didn’t have to wait too long – certainly not much more than usual – and I was in the treatment room within five or six minutes after the appointment time, so not too bad. Luckily I had managed to hold on, helped by a conversation with one of the radiographers about running and where we both used to live, but it wasn’t particularly comfortable.

Once inside the treatment room it was relatively easy to hold on. The radiographers were able to keep everything moving at their usual quick pace so I knew I only had to hold on for a few minutes more. They tell me they have contingencies in the event of an “accident” but I’m not inclined to try them out…

I do wonder if the treatment itself is making my bladder slightly more sensitive to the sensation of being full. Sometimes the urge to go, or at least the feeling of being full, does seem to come on rather quickly. I guess there’s not much I can do about that for the time being.
